Sharks shock Crusaders
The Sharks produced the upset of the Colonial Cup so far with a 22-16 defeat of the previously unbeaten Crusaders at Churchill Park in Lautoka on Friday night.
A 76th-minute try from fullback Penaia Vakaruru brought victory to Rayne Simpson’s side, who had trailed 13-5 at the break.
Skipper Jack Prasad enjoyed another stand-out performance and was voted Colonial Player of the Match.
Quotes:
Rayne Simpson (Sharks coach):
We had a game plan, which we used well. We knew we had smaller forwards so we ran the ball wide. We have a mix of young players and also some more experienced ones like Jack Prasad, who marshalled the players well. When we were 13-5 down at half-time, I told the boys to use the backs and run the ball. We also made some timely changes that resulted in our final try to Penaia Vakaruru. The fresh legs stood out in defence and held back the attacks. We will take each game as it comes and just learn as we go along.
Ilivasi Tabua (FMF Flying Fijians coach):
I was impressed with the pace of the game today, and all in all both sides played really well. Jack Prasad was Waisea Luveniyali did well for their teams but the players that played really well were Taniela Rawaqa and Vereniki Goneva for the Crusaders, and Viliame Gonevulavula for the Sharks. The Sharks did well to come back into the game, especially after being down at the break, and they deserved the win.
