Colonial Man of the Match ($200): Samu Kunanitu
Joji Rinakama (Stallions coach)
“We had prepared really well and hard for this final, and as I said before we came here to win. We have all the respect for the Crusaders and they are also a tough team, but we contained them well. As always, you can do well during pool play, but come the final it is a totally different game. Our experienced players did really well for us and I am really proud of how they played well today. Emosi Vucago is a very talented player and he was in a class of his own during the game. The Digicel Fiji 7s boys contributed well and altogether I am thankful to the entire team for their gallant performance. We were off to a slow start but I told the boys that they are continuing to give away possession and that if they wanted to win they have to keep it.”
Iliesa Tanivula (Crusaders assistant coach)
“It came down to the little unforced errors and wrong options. This match was ours to win but we gave it away to the Stallions who are so experienced. Unfortunately, we were not able to convert the Stallions’ mistakes into points and that has cost us so dearly. The boys played really well and I was very impressed with how they played as a unit. Our forwards did well but the backline experience of the Stallions saw them through. I have really enjoyed this Colonial Cup and I can see many of these young players making big names for themselves in the very near future.”
Ilivasi Tabua (FMF Flying Fijians coach)
“The Crusaders gave this match away I thought they were going to change their kicker. They missed very kickable opportunities and should have opted for either Waisea Luveniyali or Jo Tora, who are renowned kickers. The Stallions won through individualism and experience and I commend the Crusaders for playing as a team. They played a more structured game but unfortunately were not able to come through. They started well and should have held onto that rate, but they did not.”
Age grade results:
U19 Final: Stallions 27 Highlanders 26 (H-t: 22-20)
U21 Final: Highlanders 17 Knights 9 (H-t: 9-3)
