Tailevu hang onto Farebrother
Tailevu had to come from behind to defeat Namosi 23-22 at Ratu Cakobau Park and retain the Farebrother-Sullivan Trophy on Saturday, replacement looseman Sunia Sevu scoring the winning try in the 58th minute.
Namosi played an expansive game in the first half and spent long periods in Tailevu territory. Former national fullback Atonio Nariva manned the fly-half position and created plenty of space down the backline. He also kept Tailevu on the back foot with some outstanding touch-finders.
However, Tailevu had the weight and height up front and the second half saw a different game altogether.
Captain Jonacani Eranavanua scored the opening try to put Tailevu first on the scoreboard. After converting the try, Tevita Waqainaweni added another three points for a penalty.
Namosi fought back through a try to Mitieli Tokalau. National sevens rep Setefano Cakau then put Namosi ahead with their second try.
After Waqainaweni had kicked another penalty goal, tries from Cakau and Selesitino Darako gave Namosi a 22-16 lead at half-time.
In the second half, Tailevu switched their game plan and kept play in their opponents half. Waqainaweni had several shots at goal without success, so they opted to go for the line and scraped home through the pushover try from Sevu.
