FAREBROTHER-SULLIVAN TROPHY

Saturday 30 October, 2004

Nadro continue dominance

The Nadroga revival continued unabated on Saturday as the Stallions held off Lautoka for a 20-8 victory in their first defence of the Farebrother-Sullivan Trophy for six years.

Bringing back memories of the great Nadro teams of the 1970s, the Isaia Rasila-led team held off a stiff challenge from the Maroons, for whom Big Bill Cavubati was captain for the day.

The last time the Stallions got their hands on this fabled trophy, they held it successfully for 15 challenges through two and a half years before giving it up to Naitasiri 25-18.

On Saturday, feisty hooker Apisai Turukawa scored a brace of tries to add to his scores in the previous two weekends, while fullback Neumi Nanuku celebrated his call up for the national team with another try – his 10th of the season.

Lautoka showed tenacity and ingenuity at times as they tried everything in the book to make inroads into Nadro’s defence.

But after 80 minutes, a 50-metre dropped goal from fly-half Mesake Beranaliva and a late try to right wing Watekini Vunisa was all the Maroons had to show for their efforts.

The Fiji rugby season has been extended again this year because of weak scheduling, and the Farebrother will now take a two-week rest until after the New Zealand Divisional XV matches have been completed.

Suva will challenge Nadroga on 20 November with Naitasiri playing on 27 November.

The Telecom Fiji Cup final eventually took place three weeks after its scheduled date because a couple of fixtures hadn’t been completed. And that had a knock-on effect to the other competitions.
