FRU holds positive talks with Serevi
The Board of the Fiji Rugby Union met with Digicel Fiji 7s coach Waisale Serevi on Tuesday evening in an effort to solve the recent impasse over his future with Fiji Rugby.
“We had a very positive discussion with Waisale Serevi,” FRU chairman Keni Dakuidreketi said. “We talked about his role with Fiji Rugby and where he wants to go with his coaching career.”
“He stated very clearly that he wishes to remain as coach of the Digicel Fiji 7s team so we will now have further talks with him in an effort to finalise a contract that reflects this position.”
In August 2005, the FRU hired Serevi as a full-time resource coach a role that also saw him work with the Fiji U18s team and travel to Europe as assistant backline coach for the FMF Flying Fijians.
When the IRB World 7s began in December 2005, Serevi focused his attention on the Digicel Fiji 7s team with great success, leading the team to their first-ever IRB 7s Series title.
“Now that Serevi has made it clear that he wishes to concentrate on 7s only, we can work out an arrangement that suits both parties,” Dakuidreketi said.
“There has been a lot of media speculation in the last few weeks, but we are now confident that both sides can move forward positively and thus allow Serevi to prepare for next month’s Wellington 7s with a clear head."
