FMF to reward players with bonuses
FRU major sponsor, Flour Mills of Fiji, announced Wednesday a performance bonus plan worth potentially up to $500,000 for the players representing Fiji at the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France.
“FMF already spends close to $650,000 a year on sponsoring the Flying Fijians,” FMF chairman Hari Punja said. “To help boost the players’ performance at the World Cup, FMF is announcing this performance-based incentive to the players.
“This incentive, to be made directly to the players, could be worth $500,000. For winning the pool matches the players stand to gain around 20% of the incentive, and if they win the World Cup they will receive the full $500,000,” Mr Punja said.
“I believe that such initiatives will encourage the FMF Flying Fijians to give their best for the country and make Fiji proud in the eyes of the world.”
FMF have sponsored the Flying Fijians since mid-2005, and with the current development and high performance plans under way at Fiji Rugby, the national team look their best prepared for a World Cup since 1999.
FRU chief executive, Timoci Tavanavanua, expressed sincere appreciation for FMF’s new initiative.
“This will be a great added incentive,” the former Test wing said. “FMF Flying Fijian coach Ilivasi Tabua is putting together a solid campaign for France 2007, and I’m sure the players will be delighted to hear about these bonuses from FMF.”
“In these difficult economic times, it’s wonderful to see a sponsor such as FMF backing the national team like this.”
