Fiji International 7s to proceed
The Fiji Rugby Union confirmed Wednesday that it intends to proceed as planned with the Fiji International 7s tournament in January despite the ongoing crisis gripping the country.
“Our plans have not changed,” chief executive Timoci Tavanavanua said.
“We are in the process of writing to all the invited teams to reassure them that this tournament will continue as planned on 19-20 January and that the safety of players and officials would not be in danger.”
“At the moment, there’s no reason to suggest that the staging of the Fiji International 7s will be directly affected. Indeed, it is at times like these that a successful international sports event might help bring some cheer to our lives.”
Fiji hasn’t hosted an international 7s tournament since 2000, prior to the failed coup attempt by George Speight. The plans for next month’s tournament are the first step towards re-establishing Fiji as a host venue for the IRB World 7s Series.
Teams from the Pacific Islands and other parts of the Pacific have been invited.
