Fiji Int'l 7s called off
The Fiji Rugby Union have been forced to cancel this month's Fiji International 7s following the late wihdrawal of the title sponsor on Wednesday.
"This is very sad and disappointing," FRU chairman, Keni Dakuidreketi said. "We have been working hard over the past few months to get this tournament off the ground despite the ongoing problems in the country but without the title sponsor we can't justify the risks involved."
The tournament was to have been held on 19-20 January at Churchill Park in Lautoka.
"Several teams had pulled out earlier because of travel advisories from their own Governments," Mr Dakuidreketi said. "But we still had an assurance from our sponsors that all would be okay."
That changed this morning when the sponsors advised us that they could no longer go ahead with the agreed amount. The news last night of Canada's withdrawal can't have helped."
Director for Sponsorship, Jeremy Duxbury, reiterated the chairman's comment.
"Obviously, its a sad day when something like this happens," Mr Duxbury said. "I'd like to apologize sincerely to all those persons that will be affected by this late cacellation, expecially the international teams that have been preparing to come to Fiji for this tournament."
