FRU to reward Digicel Fiji 7s players
The Fiji Rugby Union will hand out more than $20,000 in bonuses to members of the victorious Digicel Fiji 7s team this week following the win in San Diego and the runners-up finish in Wellington.
The Digicel Fiji 7s are currently joint leaders in the IRB World 7s Series and will head to Hong Kong next month with their minds set on retaining the world title.
“We will pay bonuses of more than $20,000 to the players and officials that went to Wellington and San Diego,” chief executive officer Timoci Tavanavanua said. “This is in addition to the $26,000 cash paid in allowances for the trip, and on top of the monthly amounts paid to the contracted players.”
“The total funds paid to the Digicel Fiji 7s squad over this two-week period is in excess of $50,000.”
“We are investing a great deal in this team as we believe that when they perform like they did in these two tournaments they lift the country’s spirit and show everyone that Fiji are the best 7s team in the world.”
As well as the cash payments, the FRU provided extra camps for the squad and allowed extra players to join the fold so the selectors could be sure the best possible team could go on this trip.
But Tavanavanua explained that the FRU needs to meet with the team management and receive the tour report before the bonuses can be paid.
“There is a couple of outstanding issues we need to discuss and sort out, and once that has been done we’ll pay out the bonuses,” Tavanavanua said.
The FRU’s Games Committee will meet the management of the Digicel Fiji 7s team on Wednesday morning.
