Italy thrash Fiji 66-10
Italy made full use of their extra men to thump Fiji 66-10 in Treviso on Saturday. Skipper Alifereti Doviverata was red-carded, with yellows shown to Waisale Serevi, Vili Satala and Sisa Koyamaibole.
South African referee Andy Turner changed the course of the match midway through the first spell when he sent Serevi to the sin-bin for a high tackle. Fiji were leading 10-9 at the time. Five minutes later, Satala followed him reducing Fiji to 13 men.
By the time the little wizard returned to the action, Fiji were trailing 24-10 after the Italians had run in two tries in his absence.
Five of Italy's seven tries came when Fiji had only 13 or 14 men on the park.
A try in first-half stoppage time sent Italy into the break with a handy 31-10 advantage, turning around their early 3-10 deficit after Serevi had scored a 65-metre breakaway try, the conversion and a penalty goal.
Any chance of a Fijian fight-back was thwarted by the boot of Diego Dominguez, who picked up seven penalty goals out of a personal total of 29 points in the match as referee Turner continually penalised the Fijians.
Early in the second half, Doviverata was red-carded for a tackle on Italian prop Andrea Muraro, while replacement lock Koyamaibole was sent packing near the end leaving Fiji to struggle with just 13 men.
Referee Turner also judged Koyamaiboles tackle as being too high.
Tonga faced similar problems last Tuesday against Scotland Development XV when French referee Didier Mene issued two red cards and two yellow cards against the Pacific Islanders in a relatively clean game.
