Caucau does it again

Fiji wing Rupeni Caucau scored four tries again Sunday against Chile as Fiji coasted to a 41-16 victory in Santiago. Seru Rabeni and Sekove Leawere also scored tries, and there was one penalty try. Nicky Little landed one conversion, Waisale Serevi two.

Mac McCallion’s men led 22-6 at the break, and finished by out-scoring Los Condores seven tries to one in what must be a confidence booster for the whole squad, which has been hit badly by injuries.

Though Chile did not qualify for the World Cup, they picked up the scalps of Uruguay and the United States, who lost 42-8 to Argentina on Saturday.

Caucau’s scoring feat gives him five tries in two Tests as he becomes the first Fijian since Niumaia Korovata in 1990 to score four tries in a Test match. Korovata scored four on his debut in Fiji’s 54-6 win over Hong Kong that year.

Caucau also touched down four times in Friday’s match against Argentinian provincial team Salta.

The tries by Rabeni and Leawere were their first in Test matches.

For Chile, skipper and fly-half, Cristián González, stood out with a strong performance, while Universidad Católica centre Sebastián Pizarro scored Los Condores’ try.

Fiji thus end their seven-match tour of New Zealand and South America with six wins and one loss.

They return to Fiji this week and get a short rest before going into camp in early September, a month before the start of the Rugby World Cup in Australia.
