TEIVOVO.COM – TEAM FIJI

Waisale Serevi (fly-half)
Full name: Waisale Tikoisolomoni Serevi
Club:
Nasinu, Suva
Fiji club: Nasinu, Suva
Born: 20 May 1968
Height: 1m70 (5'8")
Weight: 80kg
Test debut: 1989 v Belgium in Liege

39 caps 11 tries 219 points (66 games, 23 tries, 376 points)

Probably the best sevens player ever. Serevi made his international 15s debut in 1988 in the Super Six competition and debuted at the Hong Kong 7s one year later.

After a lull in his Test career, Small marked his return to the 15s team in November 2001 with 20 points in 20 minutes as he led a Fiji comeback against Italy Regional XV, then scored all of Fiji’s 10 points in the loss to Italy. He scored 19 points in July 2001 in his return to the Fiji 15s fold in the Fiji Barbarians match against the Aussie Barbars.

He holds an unparalleled record at sevens with five Hong Kong titles and one World Cup winners’ medal to his name, along with three Hong Kong MVP awards.

At the 2000 Brisbane Sevens, Serevi produced one of the tries of the inaugural IRB world series to snatch victory for Fiji in the final against Glen Ella’s Australia. That try was voted as Try of the Year at the Fiji Rugby Awards 2000.

His vision and ingenuity with ball in hand make him a most dangerous opponent. He led Fiji at the 2001 World Cup and later to a gold medal at the World Games in Akita. Skippered Fiji to a silver medal at the Manchester Commonwealth Games 2002.

Serevi was recalled to lead the Fiji 7s team for the Bordeaux and London tournaments in 2004 after a lengthy, winless period.

And he restored Fiji's lost pride in the 7s world when he raised the Melrose Cup aloft at Happy Valley in Hong Kong in 2005.

He proved critics wrong when he scooped up a loose ball and darted for the winning try against England in the semi-finals.

Although Serevi does not have the speed of the young, frisky lad who caught the world by storm at the 1989 Hong Kong 7s, his experience and knowledge are ever-increasing.

The maestro coached Fiji to win its first IRB World 7s series title in 2006, dethroning New Zealand after six seasons.
